Some birthday is going to be the last

It’s that time of year again.

For years we’ve been amusing our loved ones by celebrating birthday-weeks rather than birthdays. We plan bunch of fun activities and scatter them around the week: a gourmet breakfast, visit to a museum, a weekend getaway and surprise fireworks are just some examples. This year there was a three-day open water diving course, 10-course-dinner and well, the fact that we were on a paradise island in Thailand.

Why such effort for a birthday?

The idea of birthday-week isn’t just to celebrate and party for days, but to take pressure off the main date. Stuff gets cancelled, the weather blows and every moment doesn’t live up to the expectations. If there’s just one day filled with big plans and everything has to be perfect, there’s quite a chance for disappointments.

The other reason is that you never know when it’s your last birthday. Some people say they’ll celebrate big every decade and never make it to 30. This might well be the last birthday I ever celebrated, so I acted accordingly.

And it isn’t just about birthdays.

Birthday-week is just a manifestation of our life values:

Things can go wrong, get cancelled and be disappointing – but there’s always a new chance, the next day.

Until there isn’t.

And that’s why we celebrate. Embrace ageing and celebrate life, one day it’ll be the last party you attend.

xx
